Throwing a high tea birthday party? Brilliant choice, even if you’re calling it the wrong thing (we’ll come back to that). But if you’re already stressing about how thinly to slice cucumber and how many teapots you actually own, stop your fussing and read on.
Plan Ahead
Send birthday party invitations early—six weeks if possible—and include an RSVP. Will people respond? Probably not. Etiquette’s on life support, so expect to follow up. Try not to grump about it.
Venue
Unless you live in a palace (and if so, excellent), your home, garden, or a rented space can all work beautifully. Six guests? Your dining table will do. Inviting everyone you’ve ever met? We’ll help you find a venue that doesn’t involve floor cushions and a hammock.
Timing & Format
Afternoon tea traditionally runs 2–5pm. We’ve also hosted brunch teas at 10am and twilight teas at 6pm. Timing matters. Brunch could include quiche and croissants (not English muffins—they’re American fiction). Later in the day? Go heavy on the sweets. No one’s ever complained about too many scones.
Seated: Elegant, structured, Downton Abbey vibes.
Buffet-style: Casual, mingling-friendly, perfect for garden parties or small spaces.
Both work. We help you decide which suits your vibe—and your furniture.
Theme It
A theme doesn’t have to mean period costumes and dry ice cocktails (though I’m not opposed to either). It could be as simple as “vintage floral” or “Mad Hatter chic”, whatever that may be.
Maybe you’re inspired by your favourite book, decade, or even just a colour palette. We’ve created everything from Bridgerton-inspired teas to boho garden parties, Jelly Cat teas to Parisian soirees.
Be a Thoughtful Host
Offer alcohol-free options that aren’t just sad sparkling Martinelli’s apple juice. We serve proper mocktails. And ask guests about dietary restrictions, not preferences—this isn’t a toddler’s birthday.
Tea, Obviously
Don’t dig out whatever ratty teabags you nicked from a hotel in 2016. Offer proper tea: one black (Earl Grey is classic), one fruity, and a caffeine-free or lighter blend like a green tea. You don’t need a full apothecary, just enough to make guests feel looked after.

We’ve hosted tea parties in back gardens, boardrooms, and even a rustic barn. We bring everything you need, from the vintage china to the perfectly blended tea. Want to keep it traditional? Absolutely.
Prefer a twist, like a tea blending station or etiquette tips between courses? Even better. And yes, we’ll politely explain why your High Tea Birthday party is correctly termed Afternoon Tea
